Feb 17 updates

We are jumping into the Web 2.0 mix ... we have (drum roll please) ... a website! Check it out: www.gpsadc.blogspot.com

It isn't perfect (I am not a programmer), but it has a lot of neat features, and we can easily add more. Besides posting info, it has links to important websites, updated feeds from many SW blogs, a calendar that I will be updating with all local community events, and a spot where you can sign up for email updates (in the lower, right-hand corner). I will continue sending emails via this list for the meantime, but try signing up on the website and let me know what you think. You can leave comments on any of the posts, so I'd love to hear from you.

For those of you that use Facebook, I've also created a Facebook group for GPSA as well. Let me know if you have any problems locating it.

Some important topics were covered in last week's ANC 6D meeting, so I've posted Commissioner Jorgensen's notes below. Please take note of the presentation the Deputy Mayor's Office of Economic Development will host on Wed, March 25 at 6:30pm in the former H2O building. They want public input on the plans to replace the Fire House on E St SW.

Today, Tommy Wells will introduce the Anacostia River Cleanup and Protection Act of 2009. Check out his website (www.tommywells.org) or www.trashfreeanacostia.com. This is an important initiative for the health of all of our local waterways.

Jim Thrift announced the following: The official DC Cherry Blossom festival is from 3/29 to 4/11 with the big parade on 4/4 and the waterfront activities on 4/11 with the tent, exhibits, and visitors at the gangplank/waterfront area. FYI 4/11 is also Easter weekend.

The next PSA (Police Service Area) 104 monthly community meeting is this Thursday, Feb 19, from 7-8:30pm in the River Park Community Room, at 1301 Delaware Avenue, SW.

Last but not least, the March Southwester is available (http://swdc.org/news/Southwester_MAR_2009.pdf)

Here are Commissioner Jorgensen's notes from the last ANC 6D meeting.

To members of the ANC6D01 community:
At Monday nights' ANC meeting:
1. MPD received approval for some existing parking spaces at the Bowen School which is being renovated into the new Ist District Headquarters. The new headquarters will include a community meeting room with microphones and a screen for presentations. Thanks to Commissioner Ron McBee for working hard to make this happen.
2. Phase II of the waterfront park at the Yards was approved. This includes a sculpture and three buildings for restaurants and retail. You can find a picture of the park on http://www.forestcitywashington.com/.
3. A new community benefits agreement with the Corcoran Art School was approved, including art school scholarships, neighborhood arts projects and a SW Arts Festival. Thanks to Commissioners David Sobelsohn and Ron McBee for negotiating these benefits.
Also, on Wednesday, March 25 at 6:30pm in the former H2O, 800 Water St, the Deputy Mayor's Office of Economic Development will host a presentation of the three proposals they are considering for the replacement of the Fire House on E ST SW. There are two lots to be developed: the one that has the fire house now as well as the parking lot at E and 4th ST SW. They really want community input so please come and make your wishes and concerns known.
Jane Jorgensen, Commissioner

First, a big welcome to new GPSA members! We value your desire to become more involved in the community. GPSA depends on your support.

As you most likely saw in a recent management email, GPSA negotiated with marina management last weekend to post the list of contractors that "may be eligible" to work in the marina on the Gangplank website (http://www.gangplank.com/ and click on "Contractor List" on the left-hand side of the website). We are very happy about the posting as it increases transparency and makes accessing the list simpler for anyone with Internet access.

We have put together some notes (see attachment) from Tuesday's meeting with Nina and J. Let me know if anything should be corrected or added. Don't forget to fill out the customer service survey when you have a moment: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=BKbZhQJugiQ9EkA_2bRXPWRA_3d_3d

John, Jim, and I will be putting our heads together soon to set a date and time for the Spring GPSA meeting. In the meantime, please continue to brainstorm regarding community issues that you feel are important for GPSA to address.

The SW Safety Walkers will be holding a special Community Peace Walk on Valentine's Day. We really appreciate this local, community policing effort, so please support them if you are available. They will meet on Saturday, Feb 14 at 3:00pm at Potomac Place Tower at 800 4th St., SW.

Those are all the announcements I have for the moment.

Have a great weekend everyone.
